Gay Simpson has been a nurse for Cedarhurst of Edwardsville since the building opened. Some of Gay’s duties include passing medications, assisting doctors, addressing medical needs, and helping to have good days.

During Gay’s 33 years of nursing experience, she has mainly worked in other facilities that provided dementia care and skilled nursing. She studied nursing and obtained her LPN from District 189 in East St. Louis.

Gay was born at Christian Welfare in East St. Louis in 1956 to Anthony “Ance” and Dorothy Gaa. However, she moved and attended high school in Belleville and graduated from Belleville West.

During her time away from Cedarhurst, she also spends her time with her husband, Tom, who she has been married to for 26 years. Together they own a farm in Edwardsville that includes a pond in their front yard. Gay lives less than a mile from work and has kindly invited staff and residents to her home to enjoy the water and her land. On the farm, Gay raises chickens and bees. She and her husband also have a greenhouse and a large garden where they grow their own food. Gay makes her own homemade soaps that have become a popular item to the Cedarhurst of Edwardsville family.

Gay also enjoys listening and dancing to music. She is often found with the communities at Cedarhurst playing Jazz music while singing and dancing with the residents. She has also donated many CDs to the communities for residents to enjoy. Gay also enjoys going to services at Bethel Refuge Ministries. Gay also hosts a church service for the residents at Cedarhurst of Edwardsville on Sunday mornings.

Gay has a strong passion for working with seniors, specifically those that need memory care. With many years in the nursing field, Gay says that “Cedarhurst is the type of place I always dreamt would be created for those with dementia.” Our staff and residents enjoy Gay’s positive attitude and willingness to always offer a helping hand.
